DKP Decay question

DKP Decay question

I have a question about DKP Decay. We are about to turn on the feature and use the default values that you have already set up Chops.
I just want to verify that it decays both Earned DKP and DKP Adjustments. We give out DKP for certain donations that we are looking for to either craft gear or create items needed for raids. We would like these values to decay as well as earned DKP.

Thanks again for a great service Chops.

Everything get decayed. Adjustments, spent DKP, earned DKP.

The objective of the current implementation of decay is that everything that happens in the past is "less important" or "has less of an effect on the current."

So an item purchased 5 months ago for 20 dkp, may have decayed to 5 dkp by now.

Sorry for resurrecting this older post Chops, but I am confused as to the reasoning behind this. Wouldn't decaying the amount of "spent" dkp in the past in effect be increasing the amount of DKP that a person has? IE: user has 50 DKP (which includes calculationf or a 20 dkp item he spent a while ago) ..if that spend dkp changes to say - 10 dkp, wouldn't that mean he now has 60 DKP available?

I totally understand the decay on what a person has available to spend (his earned dkp) either via adjustments or earned, but why decay what he spent in the past? I would think it would be of benefit to look at past spending patterns??

I am sure I'll have other DKP decay questions but I'm trying to read all the psat decay posts (hence my response to this one)

Thanks Chops!

Indeed it does.

The design of this decay system is that new events are ultimately weighted higher than old events. This includes someone who went on a spending splurge 6 months ago. It's ancient history.

If someone is capable of spending and earning at exactly the same rate, then their decay will ultimately hover around zero.

Positive decay is possible if someone does manage to spend more than he's earned, but it's difficult to maintain, and usually requires things getting defaulted to an individual.

Consider the following example:

6 months ago:

Joe earned 300 DKP
Joe Spent 200 DKP
Giving a total of 100 DKP

And now that stuff is fully decayed (let's say 25% is fully decayed)

With the system in place,
His Earned would now be: 75
His Spent would now be: 50
Giving him a total of 25 points (which is exactly 25% of 100).

If we only decayed the Earning,
His Earned would be: 75
His spent would be 200
Giving him a total of -125 DKP.

Maybe you disagree with the approach above, but this is the way it was implemented and I find it to be the most fair (I've had plans on implementing different formulas, but as yet, have not).

The ultimate rule of the implemented decay is this: Recent events are more important than old events, and weighted accordingly. That, and all the points are ultimately working their way to be fully decayed.

Ok yeah that makes sense I suppose. It all comes out in the wash so to speak. The only problem is that it might be a little difficult to explain to my members

One last thing to clarify - does decay start from the date of a given raid or is it based on inactivity? I'm guessing it has nothing to do with inactivity but just wanted to be sure.

So if we have 1 raid a week, and decay is set to 14 days, by the time we get to the 3rd raid, the points from the first are starting to decay...by the time we hit the 4th raid the first raids points have decayed more and the 2nd raids points are starting to decay?

It is based on the date of the event (raid, item receipt, adjustment). Each item decays independently, so it has nothing to do with inactivity.

Bingo.

Admittedly, it gets difficult to explain to members, and indeed, it was difficult for me to explain to my members when I originally implemented it.
