The problem is that, to make your site look custom or "good", advanced layouts need to be used. This isn't a huge difficulty, but does mean that any time you needed a change to the site, someone (probably the person who did it for you initially) would have to do the work.

Do you have any expertise in CSS or HTML at all? If so, I have some suggestions (i.e. some free software tools and hints) that can get you up and running. Once you know how, it's fairly easy to duplicate a "look" you find for another page that you like.

If you have no HTML/CSS expertise, you'll either have to learn it or find a willing person to edit your layout files / do future maintenance.

I'm almost done laying the framework for pluggable templates, so if you're willing to wait a few weeks, you could just choose templates to download.
