But thebrethren.org is not owned by me. When something like this happens, it's usually that the domain name was not renewed and therefore expired.

It looks like the domain name did indeed expire and might still be held by register.com (in a pending deletion state - see highlighted). Whoever within The Brethren purchased the original domain name (not the DKPSystem.com site), will likely be able to get it back for a fee, or the simpler approach would be to register another domain name.
If the domain name is indeed released, it will likely get picked up by what's called a domain squatter, so getting it back would be ideal.
