Sorry for resurrecting this older post Chops, but I am confused as to the reasoning behind this. Wouldn't decaying the amount of "spent" dkp in the past in effect be increasing the amount of DKP that a person has?
Indeed it does.
The design of this decay system is that new events are ultimately weighted higher than old events. This includes someone who went on a spending splurge 6 months ago. It's ancient history.
If someone is capable of spending and earning at exactly the same rate, then their decay will ultimately hover around zero.
Positive decay is possible if someone does manage to spend more than he's earned, but it's difficult to maintain, and usually requires things getting defaulted to an individual.
Consider the following example:
6 months ago:
Joe earned 300 DKP
Joe Spent 200 DKP
Giving a total of 100 DKP
And now that stuff is fully decayed (let's say 25% is fully decayed)
With the system in place,
His Earned would now be: 75
His Spent would now be: 50
Giving him a total of 25 points (which is exactly 25% of 100).
If we only decayed the Earning,
His Earned would be: 75
His spent would be 200
Giving him a total of -125 DKP.
Maybe you disagree with the approach above, but this is the way it was implemented and I find it to be the most fair (I've had plans on implementing different formulas, but as yet, have not).
The ultimate rule of the implemented decay is this: Recent events are more important than old events, and weighted accordingly. That, and all the points are ultimately working their way to be fully decayed.
