We were flip flopping templates this week and now both the Thread tag selector and the message that tells you who a private message is to has disappeared.
I found this thread and thought that might be related but what about the listing for members in a private thread?

There are 3 things that have to appear in your layout for all the drop downs to show up correctly. <!-- System:Title --> <!-- System:PageDesc --> <!-- System:Content -->
