I'm using advanced layout...

and just not sure.. does the last 10 items not show until you get drops?

or should something be showing up?

One of the things about the "LAst10Items" is that it DOESN'T actually create the menu. It just prints items wherever they are. So you'll actually want to probably stick the menu code around them directly in the layout file.
