The best bet is naturally to get one with a .ico extension. However, firefix is more forgiving: it supports other major image file formats.
It should also only be 16 bit. 32 bit favicons don't always work.
Also, in IE, unless you've added the page to your favorites, or to your Links bar, the Favicon will never display. Once you add it to your favorites, it will update the next time you close your browser and return to the page.
Ok, I used this site to create my favicon in the .ico extension but then when I submit it on the site it shows up just as an x image. It just looks like it isn't being uploaded or isn't being found after the upload. Anyone know what the issue may be?

Unfortunately, .ico isn't a valid IMAGE extension for the web, so while it's trying to print the image to the page, it will look like a broken image because the browser doesn't know how to render it except as the favicon.
Huge /BUMP! Ok, can someone tell me exactly the steps needed to do this correctly? I see other guild sites (dkpsystem.com based) where this works perfectly, even without having to put it into my favorites. So, I must be missing something.
I used Gimp to make an .ico favicon, to the dimensions and filesize suggested, but still no worky. A proven step-by-step is welcome and greatly appreciated
ShadowsofMirage.com opens your DKPSystem.com site in a frame. There's NO way to make it work with that, because the frame is the uber-page that decides the favicon. You'll either need to reconfigure your domain to use the A record assignment, or modify the main frame page to have the favicon code inserted.
